Jones welcomes new code of practice for gambling ads

06 August 2013

Federal Member for Throsby Stephen Jones has welcomed the announcement from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to register new codes of practice that limit the advertising of live odds during sports broadcasts.

These changes mean the bookies are bounced from the stadium, the gambling ads are restricted to quarter and half time and live odds ads are canned for the entire game, said Jones.

This sends a very clear message to corporate bookies, codes and broadcasters that we cant have a model of professional sport or free-to-air broadcasting that is dependent on gambling revenue for its viability.

These changes are a step in the right direction but I also believe we can push it further.

It is well known that I have been pushing for gambling advertising to be removed from childrens viewing times and I will be exploring this issue further with the Prime Minister and my Parliamentary colleagues.
