The Albanese Labor Government is fostering inclusivity in the Illawarra with the announcement of a $20,000 grant for the Association of Community Languages Incorporated (ACLS) under the Multicultural Grassroots Initiatives (MGI) Grant Program.
The Association of Community Language Schools (ACLS) is a peak body of community language schools in NSW with 50 member schools teaching 26 languages across Greater Sydney and the Illawarra.
This funding will support the ACLS host an event in celebration of cultural diversity, highlighting the rich linguistic heritage of NSW.
Multicultural Grassroots Initiatives (MGI) Grant Program is part of the Albanese Labor Government’s broader vision for an inclusive Australia, strengthening local organisations that play a crucial role in social cohesion.
Candidate for Whitlam, Carol Berry and Member for Whitlam, Hon Stephen Jones MP had the opportunity to visit a member school of ACLS, Wollongong Pelangi Indonesia School.
They met with students and educators involved in the school, hearing firsthand about the positive impact of language learning on young people. They discussed the importance of supporting community-led initiatives like languages schools with committee member Natalia Plenina.
The Association of Community Languages Incorporated have recently received further details from the Department of Social Services Community Grants Hub to commence the event planning.
Quotes attributable to Member for Whitlam, Hon. Stephen Jones MP:
“The ACL member schools are contributing to a future where our region is better connected. The skills students develop in programs like this one will benefit them in careers ranging from diplomacy to business, education, and tourism.”
“Countries that invest in multilingualism see higher trade activity, stronger international relationships, and a more adaptable workforce. We are putting Australia first, ensuring local education reflects the skills we need to participate internationally.”
“Language education is more than just learning words, it’s about building bridges between communities, fostering understanding, and strengthening our local communities.”
Quotes attributable to Candidate for Whitlam, Carol Berry:
“Community-led programs like this not only celebrate cultural diversity but also create real pathways for young people. There are 13 language programs run by member schools of ACL across the Illawarra. The more we invest in these initiatives, the more we ensure our future workforce is equipped with the skills needed to thrive in a global economy.”
“Learning a second language at a young age builds confidence, encourages curiosity about the world. This program is a fantastic example of how education can foster both inclusion and opportunity.”
Quote attributable to Bertha Quiros, ACLS President:
"We are excited to have been awarded this federal grant to organise a Community Languages Festival, which will celebrate linguistic diversity and highlight the vital role of community language schools in preserving heritage languages.
Through performances, workshops, and storytelling, our goal is to promote cross-cultural understanding and inspire pride in multilingualism”
