MEDIA RELEASE

The Albanese Government is enhancing Medicare for Illawarra and Southern Highlands residents.

On 1 November, the largest investment in bulk-billing in the 40-year history of Medicare takes effect, with the tripling of the bulk-billing incentive for local GPs.

Bulk-billing is the beating heart of Medicare.

After nine years of cuts and neglect by the former government, bulk billing rates have declined sharply and it’s never been harder or more expensive for Australians to see a GP.

This historic investment means it will be easier for over 46,000 children and their families and over 109,000 pensioners and concession cardholders in the Illawarra and Southern Highlands to see a bulk-billed GP.

On top of our investment in bulk-billing, we are investing in an $1.5 billion indexation boost across the board to Medicare rebates, increasing the amount that doctors receive for Medicare services and reducing pressure on GPs.

The Albanese Government is committed to making it more affordable for Australians to get the health care they need.

Quotes attributable to Member for Whitlam, Stephen Jones:

“The Coalition very nearly killed Medicare, and it will take a lot of work to put it back together again. But this investment is a great start.”

“Our Government is strengthening bulk-billing and making medicines cheaper because we know how important it is for our community to have access to affordable health care."

Quotes attributable to Member for Cunningham, Alison Byrnes:

“I know how important it is for our community to be able to see a doctor when and where they need it.”

“The Albanese Government is committed to strengthening Medicare and making it easier and cheaper to get quality health care, by tripling the bulk billing incentive and making medicines cheaper.”
