Families in the Illawarra will be among the hardest hit by Tony Abbotts new GP Tax, new Medicare analysis has shown, Illawarra MPs Sharon Bird and Stephen Jones said today.

It is a cruel tax that will hurt families right across the country, including thousands in the Illawarra, where more than 87% of all GP visits are bulk billed, said Stephen Jones.

If Tony Abbott breaks his election promise and introduces a $6 GP Tax, the cost to local families will be upwards of $15 million in taxes every single year.

In the great traditions of Medicare, Australians should receive the healthcare they need not the healthcare they can afford, said Member for Cunningham, Sharon Bird.

Families in the Illawarra who are already struggling to make ends meet cannot afford to pay to take their sick child or elderly parent to the doctor.

The Government is talking about $6 now but how long will that last and whats to stop this new GP Tax from just going up and up? said Ms Bird.

Tony Abbott said before the election he wouldnt bring in any new taxes. His new GP tax is a broken promise to millions of families that they wont forget. Ms Bird said.

Stephen Jones and I are calling on Member for Gilmore Ann Sudmalis, to take a stand for the 621,000 people in her electorate receiving bulk billed services, who will be slugged with an additional $4.5 million to see the doctor if this tax is introduced.

People across NSW could pay more than $251 million each year for primary and in many cases preventative health care.
