MEDIA RELEASE
Shellharbour Netball Club will receive a $237,600 funding boost from the Albanese Government.
Member for Whitlam Stephen Jones will announce the successful grant funding alongside Club members and players today.
It’s part of the Albanese Government’s $200 million Play Our Way Program, which is designed to remove barriers to women and girls participating in sport and physical activity.
Shellharbour Netball Club will use the grant funding to empower women and girls to take up sport through netball programs for players, coaches and officials (umpires).
Women and girls who are First Nations peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse, have a disability, reside in regional areas - including low socio-economic areas and identify as belonging to the LGBTIQA community will have access to equipment and inclusively designed uniforms to safely participate in these programs.
Shellharbour Netball Club is one of the many groups around the nation that have received Play Our Way funding for participation programs, or new or modified equipment suitable for women and girls across a range of sports and physical activity programs.
More than 660 applications for funding were received. Funding is being offered to initiatives nationwide, with a focus on women and girls who face additional barriers to participation. This includes First Nations women and girls, women and girls with disability or who are from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
Assessment of applications under the facilities stream of the Play Our Way Grant Program to support construction of new and modified sporting facilities, playing areas and spaces, is still in progress.

Quotes attributable to Member for Whitlam Stephen Jones:
“Congratulations to Shellharbour Netball Club for successfully securing this federal funding, and for all of the work they do to promote women and girls participation in local sport.
“Women and girls deserve equal access to sporting opportunities, and I’m proud to be part of a government that recognises this. That’s why the Albanese Government’s Play Our Way program is the single biggest grant program for women and girls sport ever.
“Far too often we see girls drop out of sport and not return later on in life. I’m really excited to see Shellharbour Netball Club roll out these programs to encourage locals to take part in sport – whether it’s as a coach, umpire or player.”
Quotes attributable to Minister for Sport, Anika Wells:
“Play Our way is all about creating greater opportunities for women and girls to have an equal chance to get the fun, satisfaction and health benefits sport offers.
“The huge response to this grant opportunity, and the range of great project ideas, show that Australian communities want to be more supportive of women and girls.”
