Before the election, the Prime Minister promised not to cut worker’s super. Now he plans to do just that.
Labor is calling out the breathtaking hypocrisy of the Liberal Party on superannuation.
It’s one rule for the cleaners, the shop assistants, the mine workers, the tradies – and another rule for themselves.
Scott Morrison thinks that working people should be satisfied with 9.5 per cent. He thinks it’s enough.
He’s wrong.
The median superannuation savings for Australians at retirement is $183,000. For women it is $118,000. Too many people retire with far less than that.
This is not enough to retire on – particularly with longer life expectancy and the rising cost of health care and aged care.
The Prime Minister
The Prime Minister gets 15.4 per cent Superannuation or $88,000 each year. This means that Australian taxpayers have contributed more to his superannuation in the past two years than the average Australian has in their retirement savings after a lifetime of work.
The Treasurer
The Treasurer gets $63,000 in super each year. Every three years taxpayers contribute more to his nest egg than the average Australian will have after a lifetime of work.
The Minister for Superannuation
Jane Hume is “ambivalent” and “conflicted” about super and thinks Australian women should be satisfied with what they have. That’s easy for her to say, with $51,000 going into her super each year. After three years, taxpayers will contribute more to her retirement nest egg than the average Australian woman gets in a lifetime of work.
Scott Morrison should stick to his election promise and stop treating Australians like mugs.
All Australians deserve to retire with the dignity that superannuation provides.
