LABOR’S COST OF LIVING TAX CUTS PASS PARLIAMENT

29 February 2024

THE HON STEPHEN JONES MP

ASSISTANT TREASURER

MINISTER FOR FINANCIAL SERVICES

MEMBER FOR WHITLAM

MEDIA RELEASE

Illawarra and Southern Highlands taxpayers will benefit from the Albanese Government’s cost of living tax cuts, which have now passed Parliament.

13.6 million Australian taxpayers will receive a tax cut from July 1, and 84% will get a bigger tax cut than they would have under the Liberals plan. In the electorate of Whitlam, 87% of locals will be better off.

The average tax cut in the region will be $1,514.

These new tax cuts are designed to provide bigger tax cuts for low and middle-income households to help with the cost of living, while making our tax system fairer.

Under Labor, a local primary school teacher earning $80,000 a year will get a tax cut of $1,679 and a nurse on $76,000 a year will get a tax cut of $1,579.

Quotes attributable to Member for Whitlam, Stephen Jones:

“Local workers in the Illawarra and Southern Highlands will be better off under our  new tax cuts which have now passed Parliament. Because we want people to earn more, and keep more of what they earn.

“87 per cent of locals in my electorate will receive a bigger tax break than they would have under the Liberals plan. It’s part of our plan to help Australians with cost of living pressures.”
