MEDIA RELEASE

The Albanese Government is investing more than $4 million in federal funding to improve road safety in three known crash sites at Warilla, Alpine and Fitzroy Falls under the 2024–25 Black Spot Program.

Projects include:

  • $586,000 for a one-lane roundabout (including all traffic calming, line marking, lighting and signage) at Leawarra Avenue and Ulster Avenue, Warilla.

  • $1.52 million for a motorcycle underrun and barrier (including signage, line marking and improved sealed shoulders) on a section of the Old Hume Highway south-west of Old South Road, Alpine.

  • More than $1.9 million for a motorcycle underrun and barrier (including signage, line marking and signs) on a section of Nowra Road north-west of Sheepwash Road, Fitzroy Falls.

These upgrades will make an important contribution towards reducing serious injuries and deaths for all road users in the Illawarra and Southern Highlands.

The Black Spot Program funds a range of safety measures at locations where serious crashes have occurred, or are at risk of occurring.

The Australian Government has substantially increased Black Spot Program funding, which is progressively rising from $110 million to $150 million per year.

This is part of the Government’s efforts to improve road safety, which includes progressively doubling Roads to Recovery funding from $500 million to $1 billion a year and delivering a nationally harmonised set of high-quality and timely data to inform road safety decision-making.

Quotes attributable to Member for Whitlam Stephen Jones:

“I have spoken to many locals who have raised concerns over the quality and safety of some roads in our region. That’s why our government is making a significant investment in safer roads.

“These three locations have had a high number of incidents, which makes them a clear case for the safety improvements that we’re announcing today.

“I know there is more work to be done, and encourage anyone who knows of a dangerous road location to consider submitting a nomination for future funding rounds.”

Quotes attributable to Assistant Minister Carol Brown:

“I am pleased to announce this latest round of Black Spot projects in NSW, which will improve roads across the state.

“Every death on NSW roads is a tragedy and could have been avoided.

“Local communities know where their most dangerous road locations are and their ability to nominate projects under this program and work with state and local experts in reviewing nominations is why this program is so successful.

“With the recent announcement of our increased commitment to this long-running program, I strongly encourage individuals, organisations, and local governments to nominate sites in their local communities for consideration in the next round of funding.”
