When Scott Morrison visits Cairns today he must explain why he’s left thousands of victims of the Youpla/ACBF funeral insurance collapse in the lurch.
Yesterday we met with representatives of the Gurriny Yealamucka Health Service about the impact of this collapse on First Nations communities.
They told us the financial devastation it has caused is wide and it is deep.
Some 17,000 people who can least afford it have lost thousands of dollars, in some cases tens of thousands of dollars.
In 2019, Labor wrote to the Treasurer Josh Frydenberg asking him to look into these schemes.
We warned him of the deep financial distress they were causing in First Nations communities.
The communities themselves have pleaded with him in person.
Yet for more than two years he has ignored the calls to protect the vulnerable and find a remedy for victims.
His inaction has turned a problem into a crisis, in keeping with his Government’s modus operandi.
It is now time for Scott Morrison to urgently address the despair and devastation his inaction has brought on these communities.
